Kisumu Man Receives Death Sentence for Robbery and Drugging Victim
A Kisumu resident, Kevin Onyango Kiyogo, was handed a death sentence on June 14, 2024, for robbery with violence and using drugs to incapacitate his victim. The crime took place on June 23, 2023, in Kogutu, Muhoroni, Kisumu County.
According to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), Kiyogo faced two charges: robbery with violence, punishable by death under Kenyan law, and administering drugs to commit a felony. The prosecution presented eight witnesses who testified before Senior Principal Magistrate Amos Mokoross of Tamu Law Courts.
The prosecution successfully argued that Kiyogo, possibly with accomplices who weren’t charged, used violence to steal a Toyota Hilux worth Ksh.1.8 million from James Kamau. Kamau was incapacitated after being drugged by Kiyogo.
Magistrate Mokoross found Kiyogo guilty on both counts. The sentence for robbery with violence is death, while the sentence for drugging the victim is five years imprisonment. However, the death penalty will be put on hold until Kiyogo completes his five-year sentence for the drug offense.
This case highlights the severity of robbery with violence in Kenya, which can lead to the death penalty. It also underscores the dangers of using drugs to commit crimes, which carries a separate prison sentence.
