The Kenyan government’s new Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) offers valuable health coverage, but some married couples might face a hurdle during registration – the lack of a marriage certificate.
Good news! If you’re married but don’t have a formal certificate, you can still register for SHIF. Health CS Susan Nakhumicha acknowledges this scenario and offers a temporary solution. You can obtain a letter from your local chief confirming your marital status. This letter will be accepted as proof of marriage for SHIF registration purposes.
While the chief’s letter allows initial registration, a marriage certificate remains important in the long run. If you want to include your spouse as a beneficiary in your SHIF plan, possessing a marriage certificate becomes necessary. Beneficiaries can enjoy the plan’s coverage, making the certificate crucial for sharing these healthcare benefits.
The nationwide registration for SHIF kicks off on June 21st, 2024. Kenyans can register conveniently through their mobile phones, either online or with a USSD code. For those without mobile phones, community health promoters will be available to assist with registration. Additionally, designated health facilities will have help desks to address any registration difficulties.
SHIF contributions begin on July 1st, 2024, with Kenyans contributing 2.75% of their gross salary/income. This program replaces the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), offering a revamped approach to healthcare coverage.
