On Thursday, June 20, 2024, the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) issued a stern warning to the National Police Service (NPS) amid ongoing nationwide protests against the Finance Bill 2024.
LSK President Faith Odhiambo called for immediate respect of the citizens’ constitutional rights to peaceful assembly, as enshrined in Article 37 of the 2010 Constitution.
In a public statement, Odhiambo expressed the society’s determination to safeguard the protesters’ rights and monitor any instances of police misconduct.
“The Law Society of Kenya is closely observing today’s protests. We want to remind the police officers across the country that any form of violence or arbitrary action will not be tolerated,”
“Acts of aggression or intimidation against peaceful protesters will be met with strong opposition and legal consequences.”
Odhiambo further emphasized the legal implications for any officers who act unlawfully, stating, “We are meticulously recording all unlawful actions committed by the police. Any officer found violating the law will face legal action. We will not hesitate to take all necessary steps to ensure accountability.”
She also urged the protesters to remain peaceful and report any incidents of police violence.
“We call on all citizens participating in the protests to exercise their rights responsibly and to report any instances of violence or intimidation by the police. Your safety is paramount, and we are here to ensure that your rights are protected,” Odhiambo added.
