Content creator Billy Simani, popularly known as Crazy Nairobian, has been released following the withdrawal of a complaint lodged against him.
Digital strategist Dennis Itumbi confirmed the news on his official X account, expressing gratitude for the resolution.
“Asante, for the withdrawal of the complaint. Crazy Nairobian was released on Free Bond. Enjoy Freedom Billy,” Itumbi posted.
Earlier in the day, Simani had been reported missing by acquaintances who later revealed he had been detained for his remarks on the contentious Finance Bill 2024.
His disappearance triggered widespread concern on social media, where netizens called for his release and criticized the police for the perceived suppression of free speech.
Itumbi clarified that Simani’s arrest was linked to allegations of sending threatening messages, a charge that many online dismissed as trivial.
“I have checked with the Police why Crazy Nairobian, Billy, is under arrest. I understand he sent threatening message/s,” Itumbi wrote, noting that while he personally receives similar messages frequently, he does not view them as warranting police action.
He emphasized the need for public servants to develop thicker skins and handle criticism without resorting to arrests.
The incident drew sharp criticism from a coalition of 25 human rights organizations, which condemned the arrest as an arbitrary action against content creators.
