Former deputy president and Democracy for Citizens Party leader Rigathi Gachagua has once again sharpened his criticism of President William Ruto, this time during a charged political rally in Mwiki on Sunday, December 7.
The outspoken politician was in Nairobi as part of his ongoing campaigns to unseat the president in the 2027 elections.
Earlier that morning, he had attended a church service at Dominion Christian Church in Kasarani before meeting his supporters.
Gachagua Accuses Ruto of Selling Public Assets
During his address, Gachagua boldly questioned whether President William Ruto has been disposing of key national assets for political or financial gain.
He claimed that the president had already sold major state-owned institutions such as Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), Safaricom, and Kenya Pipeline Company. According to him, this trend showed a complete betrayal of the Kenyan people.
He went as far as saying that at this rate, “the only thing left is to sell the people of Kenya,” suggesting that Ruto’s leadership was putting the country’s future at risk.
Gachagua urged Kenyans to stand firmly behind him and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka under the proposed United Opposition banner, insisting that the coalition would send the president home in the next general election.
Cow Interrupts Rally, Forcing Gachagua to Pause
In an unexpected moment that added drama to the event, the rally was temporarily interrupted when a cow wandered into the crowd. Supporters scrambled to make way for the animal as Gachagua attempted to continue with his speech.
Clearly irritated, he asked loudly:
“That cow will hurt people. Who brought this cow here? Is it Kasongo? Kasongo should be defeated… Let the devil be defeated! Should he get lost?”
The incident quickly went viral, drawing mixed reactions from Kenyans online.
Mixed Reactions from Kenyans
Kenyans on social media shared sharply differing opinions about Gachagua’s remarks and conduct. Some felt he was focusing too much on attacking Ruto, while others said the cow incident symbolised the chaos in the opposition.
Here are some of the reactions:
- Simon Wema:
“Dr William Samoei Ruto is his name. Kasongo and the rest have their owners. No curse or insult will stop the president from delivering on his promises.” - Edgar Edgar:
“He is running this race alone. If he keeps shouting like this, even his voice will disappear. He will soon understand Ruto is not his equal.” - Anne Clarah Khamete:
“Even the cow is saying it is Wantam.” - Mucee Simon:
“Congratulations for continuing to look for votes for Ruto while thinking you are destroying his support.” - Ann J Assupta:
“This is pure depression.” - Trikoy Chemursoi Steve:
“President Ruto has extraordinary energy and efficiency. Even his critics admit he runs a highly organised, tight schedule. During campaigns, his speed will leave Kalonzo and Gachagua far behind. Anyone interested in politics should study Ruto closely—you will thank me later.” - Calvonce Odhiambo E:
“This man is talking and the whole time there is no agenda—just Kasongo, Wantam, and other things. Truly, Ruto spoke the truth.”
Did Gachagua Invite ODM Into the United Opposition?
Earlier in the day while speaking at a church service in Kasarani, Gachagua reached out to ODM, urging the party to join the proposed United Opposition alliance ahead of the 2027 elections.
He warned that ODM risked losing its national influence—especially in Nairobi—if it continued aligning itself with President Ruto.
Gachagua argued that if some ODM leaders feared interacting with him directly, they could instead consult Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka to help strengthen the coalition that aims to unseat Ruto.
He reminded the public that the Wiper Party had supported ODM for many years and insisted that they should not be sidelined as new political alliances take shape.
