Vocal Ugandan musician and political activist Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has publicly expressed his support for the ongoing protests in Kenya against the controversial Finance Bill 2024.
In a statement released on his official social media page on Sunday, June 23, 2024, Bobi Wine praised Kenyan youths for their active participation in the demonstrations, highlighting their commitment to exercising their democratic rights.
Power to you, the young people of Kenya. You are speaking up, and your voices are being heard far beyond the Kenyan borders. Your message has resonated beyond Kenya’s boundaries. We hope your leaders too are listening! We continue to stand in solidarity with you. Viva,”
The Ugandan opposition leader’s endorsement comes amid widespread protests that began on June 18, 2024, in Nairobi County and have since spread to other major towns across Kenya, including Mombasa, Kakamega, Kisumu, Eldoret, Nakuru, Kisii, Embu, and Nanyuki.
The protests are in response to the Finance Bill 2024, which proposes significant tax changes and spending adjustments that many critics argue will impose undue financial burdens on ordinary Kenyans.
In response to the growing unrest, President William Ruto has indicated his willingness to engage with the protesting youths.
“I am ready to engage with the youth protesting against the ‘harsh’ tax laws pushed by my administration,” President Ruto said in a recent statement, suggesting a potential avenue for dialogue amidst the escalating tensions.
