Chief of Staff to the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) Ernest Nyerere has been released following his arrest under unclear circumstances earlier today.
Nyerere’s release comes amidst increasing concern over the alleged abductions of numerous anti-Finance Bill protesters across the country.
LSK President Faith Odhiambo confirmed that Nyerere, who was taken from his home at 5 a.m. by individuals suspected to be police officers, was safely returned to his family.
“We are relieved to confirm that Ernest Nyerere has been released and is now with his loved ones,” Odhiambo stated. “However, his ordeal highlights a disturbing trend of enforced disappearances targeting vocal opponents of the Finance Bill.”
The LSK had earlier issued a statement expressing grave concerns over what they described as a return to an era of unlawful state practices. Odhiambo emphasized that Nyerere’s arrest and subsequent release should not overshadow the continued detention of other activists and protesters.
Reports suggest that over 50 young Kenyans have been abducted in recent days, with some, like social commentator Gabriel Oguda and activist Shadrack Kiprono, alias Shad Khalif, still missing.
Others reported missing include John Frank Githiaka, alias Franje, Osama Otero, Khalif Kairo, Drey Mwangi, Worldsmith, and Hilla254. Their disappearances coincide with the intensification of protests against the Finance Bill 2024, which has sparked nationwide outrage and demonstrations.
Odhiambo condemned these actions, stating that the country is witnessing a reversion to repressive practices reminiscent of past injustices.
“We cannot stand by as our country slips back into an era of rogue policing and unlawful detentions,” she said. “The release of Ernest Nyerere, while welcome, is just a small victory in a larger battle for justice and the protection of human rights.”
