Shadrack Chaula, a 24-year-old artist from Ntokela Village in Rungwe District, has been arrested following the circulation of a video in which he verbally attacked President Samia Suluhu Hassan and set fire to an image depicting her.
Mr. Benjamin Kuzaga, the Regional Police Commander for Mbeya, announced the arrest on Tuesday, July 2 stating that the actions of Chaula, who is well-known locally for his painting skills, are considered unethical and contrary to the laws and traditions of Tanzania.
“The suspect is an artist who committed the offense of burning a picture depicting President Samia Suluhu Hassan. Such actions are contrary to the laws and cultural norms of our country,” said Kuzaga.
He further elaborated on the process leading to Chaula’s arrest. “After identifying the video clip showing the suspect’s offensive statements and actions, we initiated an investigation and subsequently apprehended him.”
The police have commenced interrogations to understand the motives behind Chaula’s actions. Investigations are ongoing to collect more evidence to strengthen the case against him.
“We are preparing the case file for submission to the Prosecutor’s Office to ensure the suspect faces the full extent of the law for his offenses against the President, which include burning her portrait and disseminating offensive content online,” explained Kuzaga.
