Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu is facing widespread criticism after publicly chastising Law Society of Kenya President Faith Odhiambo for turning down a presidential appointment from William Ruto.
The controversy unfolded on Saturday evening after Odhiambo declined President William Ruto’s appointment to the task force, which is set to audit the country’s public debt.
Nyamu, expressing her disapproval on social media, suggested that Odhiambo’s refusal indicated a lack of interest in contributing to the country’s efforts to address its financial challenges.
“I’m not sure of the rationale for LSK President Faith Odhiambo to decline the President’s appointment to the taskforce that will conduct a forensic audit of public debt. She has turned down an opportunity to have Kenyans’ interests represented by the premier bar association in line,” Nyamu wrote.
However, Nyamu’s comments quickly sparked a backlash from a section of the public who questioned the necessity of the taskforce itself, especially given the existing role of the Auditor General’s office.
One social media user pointed out, “There is already a functional office of the Auditor General to perform this task. Creating another committee to audit public debt is a waste of resources and an example of job duplication that the country cannot afford right now.”
“I don’t see anything wrong with her decision because the job of auditing public debt belongs to the Auditor General’s office. Creating additional layers of oversight is redundant and wasteful,” said a Nairobi resident in a social media post.
