Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi has confirmed a significant fallout with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, marking a stark departure from their previously close political relationship.
Wamumbi, who was elected in 2022 with Gachagua’s backing, stated on Sunday that the rift between them is not related to the recent closure of bars in Nyeri County, but something far more substantial.
“There is indeed a rift between the Deputy President and me. However, it is not about the closed bars in Karatina town, which have rendered the town lifeless for four months,” Wamumbi clarified.
The MP emphasized that the fallout is rooted in deeper issues that the Deputy President should address publicly.
“It is about something bigger than that; he should tell the truth and nothing but the truth. I will be telling the truth, and the people of Mathira will choose which side to believe in.”
This announcement comes in the wake of Gachagua’s criticism of certain leaders and the Ministry of Interior for allegedly undermining his efforts to combat the illicit brew problem in the Mt. Kenya region.
Gachagua has claimed that those opposing his initiative are tarnishing President William Ruto’s legacy, especially after initial successes in curbing the illicit brew trade.
The rift is significant given Gachagua’s instrumental role in Wamumbi’s election.
Gachagua, after being chosen as Ruto’s running mate in 2022, endorsed Wamumbi to take over his former constituency seat. Wamumbi, who previously served as a Member of the County Assembly in Nyeri, was strongly supported by Gachagua during his campaign, leading to his successful election as Mathira MP.
The Deputy President’s endorsement was seen as a major factor in Wamumbi’s victory, making their current discord particularly notable in the political landscape of the region.
Gachagua’s focus on fighting the illicit brew trade has been a key part of his agenda, aiming to combat the widespread issue that has long plagued the Mt. Kenya region.
His efforts have, however, faced opposition from some quarters, which he has suggested are trying to undermine the progress made and cast a shadow over the administration’s achievements.
