In the wake of President William Ruto’s decision to disband his cabinet, prominent law lecturer Makau Mutua has called for the dismissed Cabinet Secretaries (CSs) to apologize for their perceived failures.
Mutua, a dedicated supporter of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga, has criticized the former CSs for expressing gratitude to the President instead of owning up to their shortcomings.
“Not a single one of the Cabinet Secretaries has apologised for failing the people of Kenya and the President. Instead, they are only thanking the president for giving them a chance to serve. Tone deaf. Please take responsibility. Say I am sorry,” Mutua stated emphatically in a post on X on Friday, July 12, 2024.
President Ruto’s decision to dissolve his cabinet comes after sustained public pressure and outcry, which began with a Gen Z-led protest against the controversial Finance Bill.
The protest quickly gained traction, ultimately leading to the withdrawal of the bill. Despite this concession, the criticism aimed at the President did not abate, with several CSs being singled out for their underperformance.
The President’s move to dissolve the cabinet has sparked significant anticipation regarding who will be nominated for the new appointments.
This reshuffle marks a critical moment in Ruto’s administration as he seeks to restore public confidence and address the criticisms that have plagued his government.
Following their dismissal, many of the former CSs took to social media to express their gratitude to President Ruto for their appointments in the Kenya Kwanza government. However, this gesture has been met with disdain from various quarters, with calls for a more humble and accountable response.
As the nation waits to see the new faces that will fill the cabinet positions, the pressure remains on Ruto to make choices that will not only satisfy the public but also ensure that his government can effectively address the issues that led to the cabinet’s dissolution.
