The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has expressed strong reservations about President William Ruto’s nomination of Julius Ogamba for the position of Education Cabinet Secretary.
According to KNUT’s second national vice chairman, Aggrey Namisi, Ogamba, a professional lawyer, lacks the necessary background in education administration to effectively lead the Ministry of Education.
Namisi argued that the role requires someone with substantial experience in the education sector, particularly in overseeing the transition to the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
He noted that Ogamba’s expertise is more suited to a legal position, such as Attorney General, rather than the helm of the Education Ministry.
“Mr. Ogamba would need months of learning and induction to fulfill the responsibilities of this role,” Namisi stated.
He emphasized that teachers are concerned about Ogamba’s capability to handle critical educational reforms and ensure a smooth transition to the CBC model by 2026.
Sammy Bor, the executive secretary of the Chepkoilel KNUT branch, echoed these sentiments, stating;
“While we have no issue with Ogamba as an individual, his lack of educational experience raises concerns about how quickly he can adapt to the demands of this critical role.”
