Seth Panyako Explains Why He Broke Down During Malava By-Election: “I Also Have Feelings”
Former Malava parliamentary candidate Seth Panyako has finally spoken about the emotional moments that saw him shout at a police station and cry at a polling centre during the November 27 Malava by-election.
In a detailed interview on Obinna TV on Thursday, December 4, Panyako explained the incidents that pushed him to the edge and the challenges he faced both personally and politically.
Attack at His Hotel Before Voting Day
Panyako said that on the night before voting, while he was at his Kaburengo Down Hill Hotel, a group of suspected goons stormed the premises. According to him, the attackers threatened to burn down the hotel, and the situation could have turned disastrous.
He also claimed the group made away with KSh 1.2 million. Panyako alleged that the raid was masterminded by a well-known MP, who allegedly directed the attackers to the private room where he and his wife sleep.
He explained that the MP knew the room because Panyako had bought the hotel from his wife, and the MP was currently not in good terms with her. He believes the political rivalry combined with personal differences contributed to the attack.
Why Panyako Cried on Election Day
When asked why he broke down in public, Panyako said he was overwhelmed and going through one of the most difficult moments of his life. As the third-born in a family of 11, he reminded people that being a leader doesn’t mean he isn’t human.
“I needed the world to know that what was happening in Malava was not an election—it was war,” he said.
“I have feelings, I am not a stone. I had been strong throughout, but fighting the whole government alone was too much.”
He added that his tallying centre was also destroyed, increasing the pressure and frustration he was already dealing with.
Campaign Costs, Loss in Polls, and His Next Move
Despite spending nearly KSh 50 million on his campaign, Panyako lost the by-election. But he insisted the people of Malava still consider him their true representative.
He declared that he will have a symbolic swearing-in ceremony, telling his supporters to prepare for his homecoming event.
“I am the people’s MP. I will be sworn in. Wait for my homecoming. That is when you will know Baba is still strong,” he said.
Panyako also hinted that some government figures attempted to lure him with promises of a Cabinet Secretary position, but he remained committed to his political path. He further apologised to Raila Odinga, saying he now understands the kind of struggles Raila has faced throughout his career.
