American comedian Tiffany Haddish has defended her recent TikTok video showcasing a supermarket visit in Harare, Zimbabwe, which sparked criticism from some Zimbabweans.
In the video, Haddish expressed amazement at the size of the grocery store, highlighting its diverse range of products.
The video, viewed over 200,000 times on TikTok, drew backlash for reinforcing stereotypes.
Critics accused Haddish of ignorance, with one user commenting, “Did she think Africans shop for rocks?” and another lamenting the perception of Africa as a place devoid of modern amenities.
In response, Haddish took to X to address the criticism.
She explained that her previous understanding of Africa was shaped by misconceptions, including images of poverty and conflict.
“I was taught that people are starving in Africa and that there’s war every day,” she said.
Haddish emphasized that her visit to Zimbabwe revealed a different reality, and she shared her experience to challenge prevailing myths.
“I wanted to show the truth because many people in the USA believe Africans don’t have anything,” she wrote.
