The Office of Registrar of Political Parties Confirms Hassan Omar as UDA Secretary General

The Office of Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) has confirmed Hassan Omar as the new Secretary General of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), replacing Cleophas Malala, whose removal was announced on Monday.

This decision comes amidst internal party conflicts and allegations against Malala.

In a statement, Political Parties Registrar Ann Nderitu emphasized the need for UDA to complete its grassroots elections within the next 180 days to address the ongoing issue of officials serving on an interim basis.

The party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) revoked Malala’s appointment and appointed Omar, previously the Vice Chairperson, to the role of Secretary General on an interim basis.

The decision follows calls from a faction within UDA demanding Malala’s ousting. Led by lawyer Joe Khalende, the faction accused Malala of undermining the party’s progress and sabotaging the broad-based government formed by President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga.

They also alleged that Malala had acted as a mole for UDA’s opponents, hampering the party’s development.

Critics further charged that Malala had failed to effectively manage party processes and conduct grassroots elections, which have faced ongoing issues, including chaos and legal disputes.

Omar’s appointment is seen as a move to stabilize the party and address the grievances of its members.

The UDA now faces the challenge of completing its internal elections and consolidating its leadership as it prepares for future political engagements.
