Connie Chiume, the esteemed South African actress renowned for her roles in Marvel’s Black Panther and popular TV series Gomora, has passed away at the age of 72.
The news was confirmed by her family, who announced her death on Tuesday afternoon at a Johannesburg hospital.
Chiume’s career spanned decades, beginning in 1989 with her role in the television series Inkom’ Edla Yodwa.
She became a household name in South Africa with notable performances in Rhythm City, Zone 14, and Gomora.
Her portrayal of Zawavari in Black Panther and her subsequent role as Wakanda’s Elder Statesman in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever earned her international acclaim.
Chiume also featured in Beyoncé’s Disney musical film based on The Lion King, playing Sarabi, Simba’s mother.
Despite initially training as a teacher, Chiume’s passion for acting led her to become one of South Africa’s most beloved television personalities.
Her contributions to the industry were recognized with several awards, including the NTVA Avanti Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series in 2000 and the South African Film and Television Award (SAFTA) for Best Supporting Actress in 2009.
The Chiume family has requested privacy during this time of mourning. They have shared that Chiume was admitted to the hospital for a medical procedure before her passing.

Chiume is survived by her four children—two sons and two daughters.
