In a heartfelt announcement, Eliud Kipchoge, the celebrated Kenyan marathoner and double Olympic gold medalist, revealed he will not compete in another Olympic Games following his disappointing performance at Paris 2024.
Kipchoge, who was widely anticipated to secure a third consecutive gold medal, dropped out of the marathon race just after the 30km mark due to discomfort around his waist, finishing the race in 63rd place.
The 39-year-old athlete, who has redefined marathon running over the past 11 years, expressed his deep disappointment but maintained a positive outlook.
“It is a difficult time for me,” Kipchoge told Olympics.com.
“This is my worst marathon. I have never done a DNF (did not finish). That’s life. Like a boxer, I have been knocked down, I have won, I have come second, eighth, 10th, fifth – now I did not finish. That’s life.”
Despite his exit from the race, Kipchoge remains hopeful for the future.
He emphasized the need to reassess his career and explore new avenues.
“You will see me in a different way, maybe giving people motivation, but I will not run,” he said.
“I don’t know what next. I need to go back [home], sit down, try to figure my 21 years of running at a high level. I need to evolve and feature in other things.”
Kipchoge’s departure from the Paris marathon marks a significant moment in athletics, ending a storied career that has captivated fans worldwide.
His personal best of 2:01:09 minutes and his previous Olympic triumphs cement his legacy as one of the greatest marathon runners of all time.
