Protests are about to erupt in Nairobi’s Central Business District following the arrest of lawyer and political activist Morara Kebaso.
He was taken into custody by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on September 30, 2024.
His detention has sparked outrage, with many Kenyans expressing concern over police conduct and what they see as an attempt to silence political dissent.
Supporters of Kebaso, including fellow activists and civil rights groups, are planning demonstrations to demand his immediate release.
Kebaso, known for his vocal stance against government corruption, was arrested at his office in Kahawa Sukari.
His lawyer, Pareno Solonka, criticized the police for denying him and the media access to Kebaso, calling it a violation of constitutional rights.
The reasons for his arrest remain unclear, but it follows Kebaso’s public criticisms of high-ranking government officials, leading many to believe his detention is politically motivated.
Amnesty International has also condemned the arrest, stating that it reflects a worrying trend in Kenya where activists, bloggers, and journalists face increasing harassment.
This situation has ignited concerns about freedom of expression and the rule of law, as activists and opposition leaders mobilize to protest the government’s treatment of dissenting voices.
