Mwengi Mutuse, the Member of Parliament for Kibwezi West, faced a significant backlash from his constituents during a public participation event after he spearheaded a motion to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Mutuse, who had formally tabled the 100-page impeachment motion in parliament, citing various grounds including corruption and ethnic division, was met with hostility from his voters, many of whom disagreed with his political move.
The event took a dramatic turn when the MP was reportedly chased away from the gathering, with some describing the incident as him being “chased away like a burukenge” (a colloquial term meaning like an unwanted creature).
The incident reflects growing tensions within his constituency over his political stance. While Mutuse has defended his impeachment motion as being in the public interest and within his constitutional duties, some of his constituents feel he may be more focused on national-level politics than addressing local issues.
This clash with voters highlights the delicate balance politicians must strike between representing their constituents’ interests and taking bold political actions on a national scale.
Mutuse’s impeachment motion against Gachagua is based on several allegations, including claims of gross misconduct, undermining the presidency, and violating the National Cohesion and Integration Act.
Despite the seriousness of these accusations, Mutuse’s attempt to lead this charge has sparked controversy, particularly among his supporters who feel that he is out of touch with the needs of the people on the ground.
