Kimani Ichung’wah, the National Assembly Majority Leader, faced significant opposition from Mt. Kenya residents recently, allegedly due to his role in efforts to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Tensions have been building within the Kenya Kwanza coalition, as Ichung’wah has repeatedly accused Gachagua of creating unrest in the region to cement his political dominance.
He claimed that Gachagua’s actions are driven by a desire to become the undisputed leader of Mt. Kenya, even at the cost of peace and stability.
Ichung’wah has been vocal about his support for President William Ruto, stating that he and other Mt. Kenya MPs back the president voluntarily and not out of coercion from Gachagua.
He also condemned Gachagua’s alleged incitement of violence to disrupt development projects in the region.
Ichung’wah further vowed that they would not bow to pressure from Gachagua, insisting that the Mt. Kenya region would not be manipulated by political power plays.
The confrontation between the two leaders has sparked significant political tension in the region, with some residents siding with Gachagua, whom they view as their representative.
This divide has made the political landscape in Mt. Kenya volatile, with fears that continued friction could lead to more unrest.
