Recent political tensions surrounding Kenya’s Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua have intensified, particularly with reports that Interior CS Kithure Kindiki is being drawn into succession politics.
There are growing claims of power struggles within President William Ruto’s camp, as some factions advocate for Kindiki to replace Gachagua as DP in the next election.
Allegations have even emerged suggesting that certain “gatekeepers” are pressuring Kindiki to pay a significant amount, up to Ksh 500 million, to secure the deputy position if Gachagua is removed.
This comes amidst growing dissatisfaction with Gachagua within the political circles of Mt. Kenya.
Several leaders and groups, including prominent Mt. Kenya East elders, have publicly distanced themselves from Gachagua, endorsing Kindiki as the preferred liaison with President Ruto.
These endorsements signal deepening divisions and political intrigue as various factions position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
Despite this, Kindiki has tried to steer clear of the political maneuvering, emphasizing that his focus remains on fulfilling his duties as Interior CS.
He has called for restraint, asking political leaders to focus on governance rather than premature election campaigns
However, the push for his candidacy continues to gather momentum, highlighting the complex dynamics at play in Kenya’s political landscape.
