Detectives from Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) recently apprehended three men in Meru County, allegedly involved in violent robberies and gun manufacturing activities.
This group, operating across Imenti North and Buuri West, reportedly terrorized residents with a stolen M16 rifle and numerous rounds of ammunition.
The breakthrough came when detectives, acting on intelligence, located the suspects’ hideout, where they found and seized the weapon along with additional ammunition.
The DCI operation, conducted by specialized units, was prompted by a surge in criminal activity in these areas, including cattle thefts, break-ins, and violent assaults.
One notable incident linked to these suspects occurred on September 5, when the gang allegedly fired shots to intimidate villagers while stealing prized livestock.
Later, they targeted a homestead, resulting in a woman’s death and severe injuries to her husband. Investigations revealed that a police officer was also implicated, collaborating with the gang by supplying intelligence and logistical support.
This arrest underscored the gravity of local crime and prompted the DCI to intensify its operations in Meru and surrounding counties to combat armed criminal networks.
The DCI stated that the suspects’ activities, including attempted arson and firearm assaults, left local communities in fear.
The recovery of weapons and subsequent arrests aim to bring stability back to these regions. Residents hope this action will deter future violence, as authorities continue to dismantle criminal networks and address security concerns across the area.
