Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko recently criticized Kenyan President William Ruto, labeling him a “conman” who failed to fulfill promises made prior to the 2022 elections.
Sonko, who previously supported Ruto, claims he was promised various government positions, including ambassadorial roles and county posts, but these commitments have allegedly gone unmet.
As a result, Sonko has publicly expressed his disappointment, calling Ruto “tapeli,” which means “swindler” in Swahili, and predicting he will only serve one term due to eroding public trust.
Sonko’s discontent also appears to be part of a larger political maneuver, as he reportedly contemplates rejoining the Wiper Party, led by Kalonzo Musyoka, a move that could impact Ruto’s political support in upcoming elections.
This potential defection underscores the instability within Ruto’s coalition, particularly as Sonko’s influence could shift significant voter bases if he enters the Nairobi gubernatorial race.
Analysts suggest that Sonko’s presence would split votes across various alliances, creating a challenging scenario for Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza coalition.
Moreover, Sonko’s criticism reflects broader dissatisfaction among some of Ruto’s former allies. He has urged Ruto to address critical issues affecting Kenyans, like the Finance Bill 2024, which has drawn widespread opposition.
If Ruto fails to reconcile with allies and address public grievances, his chances for a second term could indeed be compromised, as some analysts believe Sonko’s shift could sway voters looking for alternative leadership.
