Tensions between Kalonzo Musyoka, leader of the Wiper party, and Wycliffe Oparanya, a senior member of ODM, have intensified as cracks within the Azimio coalition become increasingly evident. During recent interactions,
Musyoka criticized ODM’s actions, especially regarding Oparanya’s approach to coalition leadership, casting doubt on the solidarity of the coalition.
Musyoka’s remarks implied that ODM’s actions were a hindrance to the alliance, prompting him to discourage Wiper MPs from supporting ODM nominees for government positions, a decision he views as essential to preserving the coalition’s independence and purpose.
These issues stem from the ongoing debate within Azimio about the appointment of a leader for an anticipated Official Opposition Leader’s office, which Musyoka’s allies believe he should fill in Raila Odinga’s absence.
Conversely, Oparanya and other ODM members argue that the largest party in Parliament, ODM, should retain this position, thus excluding Musyoka.
This disagreement highlights the underlying political ambitions and succession concerns within Azimio, as Musyoka pushes for greater Wiper influence and possibly the 2027 presidential nomination.
Musyoka’s critiques also seem aimed at redefining Azimio’s stance as an opposition coalition, ensuring that it doesn’t blur lines with the ruling administration, which he fears ODM might do through cooperation with the government.
This ideological divide has led to public confrontations, as Musyoka advocates for a cohesive opposition while resisting ODM’s moves to integrate its members into government roles, including Oparanya’s potential cabinet nominations.
