Raila Odinga has reportedly turned down an African Union (AU) job offer amid escalating political tensions in Kenya.
The former Prime Minister clarified that he requested to step down from his role as AU High Representative for Infrastructure Development to focus on “pressing matters” back home.
However, sources allege that his removal was influenced by President William Ruto’s government due to Raila’s persistent criticism of the administration and his refusal to recognize Ruto as a legitimate president.
Raila, on the other hand, criticized the Ruto government for undermining democracy and failing to address key national issues.
The political fallout deepened after claims emerged that Ruto’s administration may have maneuvered to “terminate” Raila’s AU role, raising questions about the broader implications for Kenyan politics.
Raila’s allies argue that the move was intended to sideline him from national discourse.
Meanwhile, tensions have been fueled by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s opposition to any reconciliation with Raila, highlighting divisions within the ruling coalition.
Critics of Ruto’s leadership are now speculating on the administration’s motives as Raila remains a formidable force in opposition politics.
Adding to the controversy, rumors of Deputy President Gachagua’s impeachment are circulating, allegedly driven by dissatisfaction within Kenya Kwanza’s leadership.
While these developments remain unconfirmed, they indicate rising internal pressure on the government.
Raila’s rejection of the AU position is seen by some analysts as a strategic move to strengthen his position against Ruto’s administration, signaling his intent to remain a pivotal player in Kenyan politics.
