John Kiriamiti, a name that resonates deeply in Kenya’s criminal folklore, gained infamy as a daring bank robber before his eventual transformation into a celebrated author and social reformer.

Although his life and exploits have been romanticized, separating fact from fiction is challenging as some of his most dramatic narratives blur with his creative writings.

One of the most legendary stories attributed to him is a bank robbery in Naivasha supposedly timed to coincide with President Daniel arap Moi’s convoy passing by.

This audacious act saw Kiriamiti and his gang reportedly overpower police and execute the heist while forcing officers to comply passively.

The timing of this heist, right in front of a presidential convoy, added to the lore, though definitive records of this specific incident remain elusive.

However, Kiriamiti admitted to working in cahoots with corrupt police officers to facilitate some of his operations, emphasizing how criminal networks of that time operated with calculated precision.

Kiriamiti’s criminal career, spanning several years, involved meticulous planning and bold execution.

He claimed to have been part of over 100 robberies, earning significant amounts in a short time but squandering the proceeds on indulgent lifestyles.

He was eventually arrested and sentenced to 13 years for robbery with violence, contrary to reports suggesting a 30-year sentence.

In prison, Kiriamiti turned to writing, creating works like My Life in Crime and My Life with a Criminal: Milly’s Story.

These books, while partly autobiographical, included fictionalized elements that enhanced their appeal.

After his release, he committed to philanthropy, focusing on rehabilitating street children and ex-criminals in his hometown of Murang’a.

His transition from a notorious criminal to a respected figure underscores his journey of redemption.

While some details of his exploits may be embellished, Kiriamiti’s life story remains a testament to the power of transformation and the impact of storytelling.

His books continue to be bestsellers, and his life serves as both a cautionary tale and a narrative of hope for many.
