ODM Announces New Grassroots Election Schedule

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has announced that it will resume its grassroots elections across Kenya next week.

The party is set to continue the process that began last year, allowing members to elect new officials at different levels.

In a statement released on Tuesday, April 1, ODM’s Director of Communications, Phillip Etale, confirmed that the elections would officially restart on Monday, April 7, in all 47 counties.

These elections are a follow-up to the initial phase conducted in November 2024.

According to Etale, the process will begin at the ward level on April 7, where only delegates who were elected at the Polling Unit level last year will be allowed to participate.

Those who secure positions at the ward level will then proceed to the next phase of elections at the constituency level, scheduled for Wednesday, April 9.

“The ODM party grassroots elections will resume on Monday, April 7, 2025, across all 47 counties in Kenya,” he stated.

“This phase is a continuation of the elections held on November 17, 2024, where party members selected leaders at the Polling Unit level. The upcoming exercise will be conducted at the sub-branch level, which is the ward.”

Etale further explained that the elections would be conducted either through a census method or by a show of hands, with the entire process being overseen by county election committees to ensure fairness and transparency.

Meanwhile, the National Elections Coordinating Committee (NECC) chairperson, Emily Awita, assured party members that all necessary arrangements had been put in place to facilitate a smooth process.

She revealed that returning officers and presiding officers had already been deployed to all 290 constituencies to oversee the elections.

“We are fully prepared for this important exercise. All systems are in place, and we expect the election process to proceed without any challenges,” Awita stated.

UDA to Hold Grassroots Elections the Same Week

While ODM is preparing for its grassroots elections, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has also scheduled its own elections to take place later in the same week.

According to UDA’s National Election Board (NEB) Chairman, Anthony Mwaura, the ruling party will conduct its grassroots elections in 22 counties on Friday, April 11, and Saturday, April 12.

On Friday, April 11, elections will take place in Kitui, Machakos, Makueni, Kajiado, Turkana, Kisii, Nyamira, Bungoma, Migori, Siaya, and Kisumu counties.

The second phase of the UDA elections will be held on Saturday, April 12, covering Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Marsabit, Isiolo, Taita Taveta, Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Tana River counties.

With both ODM and UDA holding their grassroots elections within the same week, Kenya’s political landscape is expected to witness heightened political activities as parties prepare for future national engagements.
