A bus carrying Tanzanian Members of Parliament en route to Mombasa for the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) games was involved in a road accident.
The MPs were among delegations from East African countries traveling to Kenya for the inter-parliamentary sports event scheduled to run from December 7 to December 18, 2024.
The incident occurred as the group prepared to join over 1,000 participants expected at the games aimed at promoting regional integration and unity.
Fortunately, no major injuries were reported, and the delegation was able to continue their journey after minor delays.
The 14th EALA Games, themed “To Enhance Regional Integration,” will feature a range of sporting activities, including football, netball, and athletics, at various venues in Mombasa, such as Shanzu Training College grounds and Aga Khan Academy. The event also emphasizes inclusivity, with competitions like darts for people with disabilities.
Mombasa County has invested in upgraded facilities and strengthened security measures to ensure the safety and comfort of participants and spectators.
Leaders have encouraged visitors to extend their stay to experience Kenya’s rich tourism offerings.
This year’s games hold special significance as they celebrate 25 years of East African integration.
They aim to foster collaboration among the seven member states: Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, and the EALA.
Officials, including Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sharif Nassir, have highlighted the economic and cultural benefits of hosting such events, underscoring Mombasa’s commitment to the East African Federation.
The games are also an opportunity to strengthen ties and showcase the region’s unity through sportsmanship.
