In a startling incident at Kaptagat Police Station in Elgeyo Marakwet County, two police officers were apprehended after being caught slaughtering a cow reported missing by a local resident.
The officers, identified as Constables Chrispus Butali and Samwel Mbugua Njuguna, were discovered in the act by community members who had been searching for the lost animal.
The situation escalated as irate residents stormed the police station, expressing their outrage over the officers’ actions.
They barricaded the Kaptagat-Eldoret Road, demanding immediate action against the culprits.
The unrest prompted police to fire warning shots in an attempt to disperse the crowd.
In response to the incident, Acting Elgeyo Marakwet County Police Commander Patrick Njoroge confirmed the arrest of the two officers and assured the public that thorough investigations would be conducted.
He emphasized that no one is above the law and that appropriate measures would be taken to address the misconduct.
The owner of the cow, Mary Barmasai, expressed her distress over the loss of her only cow, valued at approximately Ksh100,000.
She called for compensation and justice, highlighting the betrayal of trust by those meant to uphold the law.
This incident has intensified scrutiny of the Kaptagat Police Station, with residents alleging that it is not an isolated case.
They claim that livestock thefts have been occurring in the area, with suspicions pointing towards law enforcement officers.
The community is now calling for comprehensive investigations to restore trust and ensure accountability within the police force.
