Fred Matiang’i Endorsed as UPA’s Presidential Candidate for 2027 Elections
Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has been officially endorsed as the presidential candidate for the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) ahead of the 2027 elections.
This announcement comes just days after Matiang’i returned to Kenya from the United States, where he had been staying since President William Ruto’s administration took office in 2022.
Reports reveal that UPA’s National Executive Committee (NEC) held a meeting in Nyamira, where they unanimously agreed to field Matiang’i as their candidate.
UPA Secretary General Jacob Bagaka confirmed the decision, highlighting Matiang’i’s nationwide popularity.
“We are confident that Dr. Matiang’i’s influence is undisputed, and this endorsement has been widely appreciated across the country.
The party is ready to rally behind him and ensure his candidacy is well-prepared,” Bagaka stated.
To strengthen their position, UPA plans to expand its presence beyond the Gusii region through aggressive campaigns.
Nyamira Governor and UPA leader Amoss Nyaribo expressed optimism, emphasizing the party’s growth and readiness for the 2027 elections.
“Our party is already national, and we are committed to making it more vibrant by tripling our membership and outreach efforts,” Nyaribo said.
Matiang’i, who co-founded UPA before the 2022 elections, initially supported Raila Odinga under the Azimio La Umoja coalition.
Although UPA secured one governor, one MP, and 18 MCAs in the 2022 elections, the party is now aiming for greater success with Matiang’i leading their campaign if he accepts the nomination.
The UPA leadership is set to hit the ground running as they prepare for the political battle against President Ruto in the 2027 presidential race.
