The U.S. Embassy in Kenya will be closed on Thursday, January 9, 2025, in honor of the National Day of Mourning for former President Jimmy Carter.
A statement released by the embassy on Wednesday confirmed the closure, stating: “In observance of the National Day of Mourning for former President Jimmy Carter, the U.S. Embassy will remain closed on Thursday, January 9, 2025.”
Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter passed away on December 29, 2024, at his home in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by his loved ones. Carter, who was 100 years old, was the longest-living president in U.S. history.
Carter served as the 39th president of the United States from 1977 to 1981. His health had been declining for some time.
Last year, it was announced that he would receive hospice care at home after battling several health complications, including melanoma, a type of skin cancer that had spread to his liver and brain.
His son, Chip Carter, expressed heartfelt words about his father’s legacy, saying: “My father was a hero, not just to me but to everyone who values peace, human rights, and selfless love.
My siblings and I shared him with the world through these values.
The world feels like our extended family because of the way he connected people from all walks of life. We deeply appreciate those who honor his memory by continuing to uphold these beliefs.”
