IG Douglas Kanja Faces Jail Time After Missing Court Again Over Missing Mlolongo Men

On Monday, January 13, 2025, Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, failed to show up in court despite an earlier order from High Court Judge Chacha Mwita.

The judge had instructed both Kanja and Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss Mohammed Amin to appear in court to explain the disappearance of four individuals from Mlolongo in December 2024.

This is not the first time Kanja and Amin have failed to attend court hearings related to this case.

Justice Mwita had specifically directed the two officials to appear in court on January 13, but neither Kanja nor Amin attended in person or virtually.

They were expected to present information on the missing men and why the orders had not been carried out.

The judge gave the two officials a final warning, instructing them to personally appear on January 17, 2025. If they do not comply, they could face serious consequences.

The case involves four people who were allegedly abducted from Mlolongo, sparking public outcry and concerns about forced disappearances in the country.

Kanja, Amin, and Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kithure Kindiki were all summoned to address this issue in court, but none of them showed up on the first scheduled court date on December 31, 2024.

When the hearing was pushed to January 8, 2025, Kanja, along with the other two officials, failed to appear again, with Murkomen sending his lawyer, Danstan Omari, to represent him.

Kanja cited his other security responsibilities as the reason for his absence.

The failure to attend the court hearings led to a warning from Justice Mwita, who threatened to hold Kanja in contempt of court.

The judge ordered the proceedings to be adjourned to the afternoon session, giving Kanja one more chance to appear.

However, once again, he did not attend, leading the judge to consider more serious legal actions against him.

This case highlights the ongoing concerns over forced disappearances in Kenya and the failure of key government officials to take responsibility in addressing them.
