In October 2024, the Kenyan National Assembly voted to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on charges including corruption, insubordination, and undermining the government.
The motion was approved by more than two-thirds of the 349-member assembly, marking a significant political event in Kenya’s history.
Following the impeachment, President William Ruto nominated Kithure Kindiki, the Interior Minister, to assume the role of Deputy President.
The High Court in Nairobi cleared the way for Kindiki’s swearing-in, despite a pending court case challenging Gachagua’s impeachment.
The impeachment of Gachagua highlighted internal conflicts within the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and tensions between him and President Ruto.
Gachagua contended that the impeachment charges were baseless and the hearings unjust. His supporters criticized the process as being hurried and unfair.
