President William Ruto has outlined four key priorities for the newly appointed Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe, emphasizing critical areas requiring immediate attention, including livestock vaccination.
Speaking on Friday, January 17, during the swearing-in of CSs Mutahi Kagwe, William Kabogo, and Lee Kinyanjui, Ruto tasked Kagwe with improving the agriculture docket.
He cited the tea crisis in Mombasa, urging Kagwe to address the backlog of tea stuck at the port urgently.
On crop health, the President noted that subsidized fertilizer had already been procured and instructed Kagwe to ensure small-scale farmers accessed the correct type of fertilizer for their crops without challenges.
Ruto further highlighted Kenya’s export potential, referencing his recent trip to the UAE, where a significant economic partnership agreement was signed.
He encouraged Kagwe to uphold high standards for agricultural products to boost Kenya’s international market credibility, especially in the dairy sector.
Lastly, the President praised Kagwe for his past role as Health CS, particularly his efforts during the COVID-19 vaccination campaign.
Ruto urged him to apply similar strategies to promote the mass livestock vaccination exercise, emphasizing that it remains a voluntary initiative for farmers.
