Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has called on President William Ruto to address the growing cases of abductions in the country.
This comes amidst heightened public concern over the issue, which has continued to dominate headlines.
Speaking at the burial of Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) Chairperson Roseline Adhiambo Odede on Saturday, Raila issued a strong condemnation of the Ruto-led Kenya Kwanza government.
He criticized the administration for failing to fulfill its promise to curb abductions, insisting that action must be taken to protect Kenyans.
“I made it clear before the year ended that these abductions must stop. If Ruto assured us they would end, then he should keep his word.
Arresting young people and subjecting them to such ordeals must cease,” Raila stated firmly.
He further questioned why no arrests had been made despite the alarming frequency of these incidents.
Raila directed sharp criticism at Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, expressing disbelief over Kanja’s claims of ignorance regarding those responsible.
“Handcuffs are not everyday items you buy from a shop; they are issued to the police. So, who else could have them?
Who are these people carrying out abductions with handcuffs?” Raila questioned, raising doubts about the government’s accountability.
Raila Calls for Integrity and Compensation
Raila also took the opportunity to challenge Kenyan leaders to uphold integrity, stating that a nation built on lies cannot progress.
He called for compensation for the young people who were injured during protests against the Finance Bill, emphasizing the importance of justice for the youth.
“It deeply saddens me to see what happened during those demonstrations. These young people deserve compensation for the injuries they suffered. Only then can we move forward as a country,” Raila declared.
Reassures Kenyans of His Commitment
Raila reassured the public that his ongoing bid for a role with the African Union Commission (AUC) does not mean he has abandoned his commitment to defending Kenyans’ rights.
“Even as I pursue opportunities in Addis Ababa, I remain steadfast in my dedication to Kenya. I have not changed, and I will continue to speak out on these critical issues,” he affirmed.
Criticism of Broad-Based Government
This marks the first time Raila has openly criticized the Kenya Kwanza administration since the formation of the broad-based government.
While some of his allies have secured positions in the Cabinet through the arrangement, Raila has not shied away from holding the government accountable.
Abductions remain a pressing concern in the country, with numerous young people disappearing under mysterious circumstances.
Despite public outcry and demands for action, no suspects have been apprehended, leaving Kenyans frustrated and anxious.
Raila’s bold stance on the issue highlights the need for decisive action to restore public trust and ensure the safety of all citizens.
