Alleged NIS Involvement in Abductions Sparks Tensions in Ruto’s Cabinet
A growing divide is emerging within President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza Government as Cabinet Secretaries appear to be at odds with each other.
This rift deepens as Ruto continues to appoint more politicians into his cabinet.
On Tuesday, January 14, Justin Muturi, the Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, accused the National Intelligence Service (NIS), led by Noordin Haji, of orchestrating the abduction of his son.
Muturi claimed that the incident, which occurred in June 2024, was only resolved after President Ruto intervened.
He further accused the NIS and Haji of being behind several other abductions that have been reported across the country.
However, this allegation was quickly dismissed by his colleague, Opiyo Wandayi, the Energy Cabinet Secretary.
Wandayi came to the defense of Haji, describing him as an innocent man with no criminal wrongdoing. He urged politicians to stop dragging institutions like the NIS into political squabbles.
“As leaders, we need to be mindful of the words we use. Even when we have political disagreements, we must protect the integrity of our institutions.
The NIS is an essential part of our national security, and it must be shielded from political attacks,” Wandayi stated.
Wandayi, who worked closely with Haji during his tenure as Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, reassured the public that Haji was not capable of committing such an offense.
He emphasized that both the NIS and its director should be respected for their contributions to national security.
“I have worked with the NIS and its current leader, Noordin Haji, and I know firsthand that he is an honorable person.
It’s unfair to tarnish the reputation of an institution that plays such a crucial role in safeguarding our nation,” Wandayi added.
Wandayi also called on fellow politicians to resolve their differences without dragging the NIS into political drama.
According to him, institutions like the NIS must be protected to preserve their credibility and ensure the safety of the country.
Meanwhile, cases of forced abductions continue to rise across Kenya, with many young people who have criticized the government disappearing without a trace.
Despite these alarming incidents, no arrests have been made, and the identities of those responsible remain unknown.
In the wake of Muturi’s accusations, the Justice Alliance lobby group has demanded the resignation of Noordin Haji.
However, Haji has not publicly responded to the allegations or the increase in abductions.
On Saturday, January 18, Haji met with President William Ruto and Redwan Hussien, the Director General of Ethiopia’s National Intelligence Security Service, at State House.
The meeting focused on discussing the security challenges facing the region, including terrorism and organized crime.
The leaders agreed on the need for collaborative efforts among countries in the Horn of Africa to enhance security and protect their citizens.
