The political landscape in Kenya’s Mt. Kenya region has experienced significant shifts, particularly concerning the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and its leadership.
Once a dominant force in the area, UDA now faces challenges as local leaders reassess their political affiliations.
Notably, the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has intensified discussions about the region’s future representation.
In a notable development, over 500 elders from Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi counties have withdrawn their support for Gachagua, endorsing Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as their new liaison to President William Ruto.
These elders believe that Kindiki’s national stature will foster better relations with other regions and promote development.
This sentiment is echoed by several Mt. Kenya East leaders who have also shifted their allegiance to Kindiki, emphasizing the need for strong development ties with the national government.
Despite these shifts, a faction of Mt. Kenya leaders continues to support Gachagua. During a recent gathering, these leaders warned that the region risks political division if they fail to rally behind Gachagua as their spokesperson.
They emphasized the importance of unity and cautioned against external forces aiming to fragment their community.
Gachagua, on his part, has vowed to fight in court to overturn his impeachment, signaling his intent to remain an influential figure in the region’s politics.
