MP Koech Alleges Gachagua Played a Role in Violent 2024 Protests
Belgut Member of Parliament (MP) Nelson Koech has accused former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of being involved in orchestrating the violent anti-government protests that rocked Kenya in 2024.
Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV’s Daybreak Show on Monday, Koech alleged that Gachagua, alongside other politicians, was behind the chaos witnessed during the demonstrations.
The MP further revealed that the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has already approved charges against several individuals linked to the protests.
“The only genuine demonstration led by young people happened once. The rest were organized by politicians, including the former Deputy President.
The DPP has already approved charges,” Koech stated. “Last week, the DPP approved charges against three MPs and one other individual.
We are waiting to hear what transpired, but from my observation, the individuals involved were not youth. It was clearly politically orchestrated.”
Gachagua’s Reaction and Accusations Against NIS
The protests, which peaked on June 26, 2024, sparked widespread unrest and public outrage. During the height of the chaos, Rigathi Gachagua deflected blame toward the National Intelligence Service (NIS), accusing its Director General Noordin Haji of incompetence.
Gachagua argued that the agency failed in its mandate to provide timely intelligence, which could have prevented the violent demonstrations.
“I sympathize with President Ruto because he was not properly informed. The National Intelligence Service is tasked with providing such crucial information, and this is where the failure lies.
The NIS has become dysfunctional under its current leadership, leaving the President, the government, and the citizens vulnerable,” Gachagua asserted.
The former Deputy President went further, calling for Noordin Haji’s resignation, stating that his leadership had led to a decline in the agency’s effectiveness.
“Noordin Haji must take responsibility for the deaths, destruction, and chaos witnessed during the protests.
He has failed the President, the government, and the people of Kenya by not performing his duties effectively or offering proper advice.
He should not only take accountability but also resign and give room for the President to appoint a competent Director General,” Gachagua demanded.
Political Blame Game Escalates
The allegations by MP Koech have deepened divisions and heightened tensions within Kenya’s political circles.
Leaders from the Kenya Kwanza government have pointed fingers at Gachagua for the unrest, while Gachagua and his allies maintain that the State is to blame for the turmoil.
The contrasting narratives have added fuel to the already heated political environment, as questions about accountability, leadership, and justice continue to dominate public discourse.
