Family Mourns as Woman Dies After KDF Officer Opens Fire Over Fare Dispute in Mombasa

A family in Mombasa is grieving the loss of their loved one, Mary Trizzer Obwor, who tragically died after being shot by a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officer.

The officer, stationed at the Mtongwe Military Base, allegedly opened fire during a public altercation over an unpaid fare with a matatu tout.

The incident occurred while Trizzer was at her home in Maweche village, Mombasa County.

Trizzer was rushed to Coast General Hospital following the shooting, where she was treated for 15 days before passing away.

According to her brother, she was shot in the stomach, and the bullet exited through her back, severely damaging her internal organs.

“The bullet shattered her stomach, leaving her intestines completely perforated,” he said.

The bullets used in the shooting are reported to have come from the KDF, with a detective from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirming the origin of the rounds after retrieving them from the scene.

Tragically, the shooting resulted in the deaths of two individuals, with another left in critical condition.

The family is now calling for justice, expressing frustration over the lack of response from the authorities, as their calls for help seem to go unanswered.

Despite their distress, the police have denied any negligence and stated that investigations are underway. However, they explained that the case might need to be converted into an inquiry before the family can receive any answers.

“On the last day, when we informed the DCI about our kin’s passing, they did not respond, and since then, we have not received any updates on the investigation,” the family lamented.

They also raised concerns about possible foul play, as the postmortem report on Trizzer’s death has not yet been released. Authorities have informed the family that they will receive the report in three weeks.

This incident is part of a growing trend of officers from various security agencies in the coastal region taking matters into their own hands.

In a similar case, on December 30, Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers allegedly shot and killed Issack Jarso Delo, 50, at his home in Tana River.

The rangers reportedly demanded an undisclosed number of goats as New Year gifts, and when the request was refused, they shot Delo multiple times before fleeing the scene.
