On Monday, January 27, Jubilee Party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni revealed the true reason behind the meeting between President William Ruto and former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Known as the Ichaweri Summit, Kioni explained that it was initiated by Uhuru, who sought to restore confidence in Kenya’s economy, especially as many international companies were pulling out of the Kenyan stock market.
Kioni shared that Uhuru’s main concern was to find ways to slow down the exodus of businesses leaving for countries like Tanzania and Uganda, which had been negatively impacting the job market for young people in Kenya.
He said that one of the main things Uhuru shared with him was the hope that the meeting could inspire a boost in the economy, which would help provide more job opportunities for the youth.
“The number of companies leaving the stock market is alarming, and it’s even worrying the international community. The closure of many firms on a daily basis is also troubling. Investors are looking for confidence, they want to believe things will improve, and they need hope,” Kioni explained.
During an appearance on Capital FM’s mid-morning show, Kioni clarified that Uhuru had not entered into any formal agreement or political pact with Ruto, contrary to some widespread assumptions.
He emphasized that the meeting was purely consultative, a standard practice between current and former heads of state.
“No, Uhuru is not in any pact with Ruto, but as a former president, he can be consulted for advice. For example, if I need guidance on party leadership, I can also seek his advice,” Kioni said.
Kioni also accused Ruto and his allies of exaggerating the significance of the meeting to mislead the public into thinking it was part of a broader political deal. He noted, “People like Ruto and his team want to make this meeting appear more important than it actually was.”
The Ichaweri Summit, which took place on December 9, attracted considerable attention, with many speculating that it could lead to another political “handshake.”
This idea gained further traction when three prominent leaders aligned with Uhuru—Mutahi Kagwe, Lee Kinyanjui, and William Kabogo—were appointed as Cabinet Secretaries for Agriculture, Trade, and ICT, respectively, following the meeting.
Their appointments came after several key figures associated with Raila Odinga’s camp also joined the government, including Treasury CS John Mbadi, Energy CS Opiyo Wandayi, and Cooperatives CS Wycliffe Oparanya, who were brought in following the Gen Z protests in July and August.
With only two years remaining before the 2027 General Elections, the political atmosphere in the country is becoming increasingly heated. Many observers predict a tough and competitive battle as the election approaches, heightening pre-election anxiety across the nation.
