Babu Owino, the Member of Parliament for Embakasi East, has revealed that he is on the Interpol Most Wanted list in Tanzania.
In a recent interview, he shared the details of his shocking experience when he was detained for three hours during a visit to the country.
According to Babu, he had arrived in Tanzania as usual, unaware that his name was listed on the Interpol Most Wanted list.
While at Dar es Salaam airport, the immigration officers scanned his passport, and to his surprise, they found that he was flagged as a wanted individual.
“The other day, I went to Tanzania, and when I arrived at the Dar es Salaam airport and showed my passport for clearance, I was shocked to see my name on the Interpol wanted list,” Babu explained. “I was not allowed entry into Tanzania and was detained at the airport for about three hours.”
Babu also claimed that he has been banned from entering Uganda and criticized the leaders of both countries for promoting division instead of unity in the region. He emphasized that he had no personal or business interests in Tanzania, making the detention even more confusing.
“It is so unfortunate that the Tanzanian government placed me on the Most Wanted list. President Samia Suluhu owes me an apology,” he stated.
In his remarks, Babu also praised Tanzania for its policies but questioned the reasoning behind the travel restrictions. He expressed his frustration with being targeted without clear justification.
This is not the first time Babu Owino has found himself in controversial situations with regional leaders.
In August 2024, while in Uganda for the launch of Raila Odinga’s African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson candidacy, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni accused him of supporting opposition groups in Uganda.
Museveni revealed that intelligence reports had linked Babu to anti-government activists, which prompted him to speak out against the MP. “I am a consumer of intelligence services, so I always see intelligence reports. There is a character called Babu.
I always see Babu dealing with anti-NRM groups. I have never accused him, but now I am accusing him,” Museveni had said at the time.
