Tragic Bus Accident Claims Lives of Dr Aggrey High School Students in Taita Taveta
A devastating accident along the Wundanyi-Mwatate road in Taita Taveta County has left at least three students dead and several others critically injured.
The tragic incident occurred when the school bus they were traveling in lost control due to brake failure and overturned, causing extensive damage and loss of lives.
The students who perished in the accident were from Dr Aggrey High School in Wundanyi. They had been sent home after a fire destroyed one of the school’s dormitories on Thursday.
Sadly, the bus driver also lost his life in the crash. Several other passengers suffered severe injuries and were immediately rushed to Moi Referral Hospital in Voi for urgent medical attention.
Eyewitnesses described the accident scene as horrific, with the wreckage of the bus lying in ruins. The vehicle’s windscreen and windows were shattered, seats were displaced, and its tyres were deflated, showing the immense impact of the crash.
Bystanders gathered at the scene, some in shock while others tried to help rescue those who were trapped inside the wreckage.
Shortly after the accident, emergency response teams, including firefighters from the Taita Taveta County Government and local police officers, arrived at the scene. They managed to clear the wreckage from the road and cordoned off the area to facilitate investigations into the cause of the accident.
The crash also led to a major traffic snarl-up along the busy Wundanyi-Mwatate highway, forcing many motorists to seek alternative routes to avoid the congestion.
Dr Aggrey High School Closed Indefinitely After Second Fire Incident
In a separate incident, Dr Aggrey High School was closed indefinitely on Saturday, February 1, following another dormitory fire that broke out in the morning.
The latest fire erupted just two days after a previous inferno had destroyed a different dormitory on Thursday night.
The Thursday night fire started at around 7 PM while students were heading for their evening lessons after supper.
Firefighters from the Taita Taveta County Government responded swiftly, arriving within 30 minutes to put out the flames. Fortunately, no students were injured in either of the fires.
Preliminary reports suggest that the fires might have been caused by an electrical fault, possibly triggered by the ongoing heavy rains across the country.
The school administration, in consultation with education officials, decided to send all students home for their safety as investigations into the cause of the fires continue.
Parents and local leaders have raised concerns about the frequent incidents, calling for urgent measures to prevent further tragedies.
The community is mourning the tragic loss of the students who perished in the accident, with many calling for stricter road safety measures and a thorough probe into both the crash and the school fires.
