How Neighbours Stopped Six Masked Men From Abducting Businessman Over Ksh1.3 Billion Loan Dispute
Residents of Kigumo in Murang’a turned into local heroes on Saturday when they thwarted an attempted abduction of a well-known businessman, Nduati Macharia, by six masked men.
The dramatic incident unfolded early in the morning when the intruders stormed Macharia’s homestead, pretending to be government officials.
According to eyewitnesses, the men first targeted Macharia’s son outside the main gate. They stopped him and demanded to know where his father was.
The young man, sensing danger, quickly thought on his feet and pretended to be a mere worker at the home.
“I told them I was just an employee and had no idea where the owner of the house was. But they insisted that they knew exactly who I was and demanded that I produce my father,” Macharia’s son recounted.
The masked men, wearing dark glasses to conceal their identities, then forced their way into the main house, where they confronted Macharia’s wife.
At that moment, she realized something was terribly wrong and immediately raised the alarm, shouting for help.
“They barged into the house without explaining why they were there. When I asked them what they wanted, they ignored me and started searching every corner of the house.
They seemed determined to find my husband, but fortunately, they failed to locate him,” Macharia’s wife stated.
Meanwhile, the businessman himself revealed that the assailants had claimed to be officials from a local bank and accused him of defaulting on a Ksh1.3 billion loan.
However, he was shocked by the allegations, insisting that he had never even opened an account with that bank.
“They had official-looking documents and told me I owed the bank Ksh1.3 billion. I was surprised because I have never borrowed such an amount, nor do I even have an account with that bank,” Macharia explained.
As the intruders attempted to execute their plan, neighbours who had heard the distress calls quickly mobilized and rushed to the scene in large numbers.
Upon their arrival, they noticed a suspicious black Subaru parked outside the homestead.
The overwhelming presence of the neighbours appeared to startle the masked men, who panicked and fled before they could take Macharia with them.
The community’s quick action proved crucial, especially given that three prominent businessmen from the same area had mysteriously disappeared in recent weeks.
The disappearances, which occurred between late December 2024 and early 2025, remain unresolved, prompting residents to stay alert for any suspicious activity.
Thanks to the vigilance of the Kigumo community, Macharia was saved from what could have been a tragic fate.
Local authorities have since launched investigations into the incident to determine who was behind the failed abduction attempt.
