Johnson Nzioka, the chairperson of the Kenya Primary Schools Headteachers Association (KEPSHA), has tragically lost his life in a car accident along Mombasa Road. Nzioka, who was the headteacher at Donholm Primary School in Nairobi at the time of his passing, died after his car collided with a trailer near Athi River on Sunday afternoon.
According to reports, Nzioka was traveling towards Nairobi when he lost control of his speeding vehicle while attempting to avoid another car. The vehicle crashed into a trailer, causing him serious injuries, which ultimately led to his death.
Following the tragic news, several politicians, including Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino, expressed their condolences. Owino described Nzioka as a friend, offering his sympathies through a heartfelt message on social media: “I wish to express my sincere condolences to the family of Johnson Nzioka, Headteacher at Donholm Primary School, whose car collided with a trailer along Mombasa Road. Rest in peace, my friend.”
Former Nairobi County Governor Mike Sonko also mourned the loss of Nzioka, writing on social media, “KEPSHA Chairman Johnson Nzioka dies in a tragic road accident in Athi River, Machakos. May his soul rest in peace.”
A respected education leader, Nzioka had over 20 years of experience as a headteacher in various schools across Nairobi. As the KEPSHA chairperson, he led over 24,000 primary school heads and more than eight million learners nationwide.
Before becoming the chairperson of KEPSHA in 2021, Nzioka’s dedication to co-curricular activities earned him a position as the Sub-County Chairman of the Kenya Primary Schools Sports Association. He later served as the National Vice-Chairperson of the same organization from 2015.
His passion for educational leadership also saw him take on the role of Organising Secretary for the Federation of East African Primary Schools Headteachers.
When Nzioka assumed the national leadership of KEPSHA following Nicholas Gathemia’s retirement in March 2021, he promised to lead through dialogue and negotiations. He was determined to empower the members of KEPSHA to help strengthen primary education across the country.
“I promise to lead with dialogue and negotiation, ensuring that our members are empowered to nurture education in primary schools across the nation,” he stated in his inaugural speech.
