UDA Leaders Propose Raila Odinga for Prime Minister Role After AUC Election Defeat
Some politicians from the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) have expressed their desire for Raila Odinga to take up the position of Prime Minister after he lost in the race for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship.
Leading this call is Nandi County Senator Samson Cherargei, who has urged the government to implement the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report. The report includes proposed amendments to the 2010 Constitution, which would introduce the position of Prime Minister.
Speaking on Monday, Cherargei insisted that Raila’s vast experience and leadership skills should not be wasted, as happened with the AUC election.
“We must fully implement the NADCO Report by amending the 2010 Constitution to create the office of the Prime Minister. Rt. Hon. Baba Raila Odinga should be given the opportunity to serve Kenyans in that capacity,” Cherargei stated.
He further argued that Raila’s contribution to democracy and the rule of law deserved recognition. “We cannot let such brilliant leadership and experience go to waste the way the African Union did. The best way to appreciate and reward him is by allowing him to continue serving the country.”
MP Koech: Raila’s Political Influence Should Be Utilized
During an interview with Citizen TV on Monday morning, Belgut MP Nelson Koech also weighed in on the matter, saying that implementing the NADCO report would help incorporate Odinga’s political experience into the government.
Koech pointed out that the inclusion of key Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) members in President Ruto’s broad-based cabinet was a clear indication that Raila could play a vital role in national leadership.
“Raila Odinga is back home, but what will he do with his energy, wisdom, and experience? Kenya Kwanza should consider him for a position in the government. We need his insights, advice, and guidance to improve our country and society,” Koech stated.
He further hinted at the possibility of finding a suitable role for the ODM leader. “We should look at the NADCO report and see what it recommended. This is not just about positions for Raila Odinga—it is about the value he brings as a leader.”
When asked directly whether the position in question was that of Prime Minister, Koech responded, “Whatever role accommodates him, we need to find it.”
Leaders Recognize Raila as a Key Figure in African Politics
Several politicians have also praised Raila for his strong leadership and commitment to pan-Africanism, noting that his loss in the AUC elections was not just a personal setback but a loss for the entire continent.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua echoed this sentiment, stating that Kenya still had unfinished business with the ODM leader.
“Africa needed you, Raila Odinga, but God, in His wisdom, decided that your motherland, Kenya, and your fellow countrymen still need you. We have unfinished business as we work to free this country from recklessness,” Gachagua said on Sunday.
Ruto and Raila’s Growing Political Ties
Despite years of political rivalry, Raila had received full backing from President William Ruto in his bid for the AUC chairmanship. His loss in the election on Saturday, February 15, has now left ODM in a challenging position, especially since he has run for the presidency five times, firmly positioning him in the opposition.
However, the new political alignment between Ruto and Raila had already started taking shape before the AUC election, with four prominent ODM figures joining Ruto’s cabinet in response to the deadly Gen Z protests in June 2024.
ODM’s Future Uncertain as Parliamentary Battle Continues
Raila’s AUC defeat has now thrown ODM into a period of uncertainty, particularly after a recent High Court ruling declared the Azimio la Umoja Coalition as the majority in Parliament. This decision has intensified the battle for control in the House, further complicating the political landscape.
Meanwhile, President Ruto’s Senior Economic Advisor, Moses Kuria, hinted on Sunday that the political chess game was far from over. In a cryptic social media post, he wrote, “Cometh the hour, cometh the man and woman,” alongside photos of Minority Leader Junet Mohammed and Minority Whip Millie Odhiambo.
As political dynamics continue to shift, the debate over Raila’s potential role in government remains a hot topic. Whether the constitutional changes proposed in the NADCO report will be implemented remains to be seen, but one thing is clear—Raila Odinga is still a key player in Kenya’s political future.
