Juja MP George Koimburi was forced to flee from Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives outside the Kiambu Law Courts on Thursday, February 20.
In dramatic footage shared with newshub.co.ke, Koimburi, who was holding a press conference with his lawyers, was seen being escorted toward a vehicle.
Suddenly, chaos erupted, and Koimburi swiftly ran from the detectives before jumping onto a motorbike to escape their attempts to rearrest him.
Confirming the incident, his lawyer, Ndegwa Njiru, who was with Koimburi outside the court, stated, “My client, Hon. Koimburi, narrowly escaped being abducted just outside the Kiambu Law Courts.”
Koimburi had appeared in court for the continuation of his case and had asked the judge for permission to avoid taking a plea on the charge of contempt of court.
However, the court rejected his request, compelling him to proceed with the legal process, including entering a plea of either guilty or not guilty, as well as facing trial or additional court proceedings related to the charge.
Koimburi’s lawyer later revealed that his client had been granted anticipatory bail in the event of any future arrest. “Kiambu High Court grants anticipatory bail to Hon. Koimburi,” Njiru shared on X, confirming the bail arrangement after Koimburi’s escape.
This incident follows Koimburi’s ongoing legal battles, which began after his comments about the government’s alleged spending of billions to attempt to make Raila Odinga the chairperson of the African Union Commission.
The outspoken legislator was arrested on Tuesday and appeared in court the following day. He faces six charges, including allegations of forging academic certificates—charges that date back nearly 30 years.
The MP, who has served since 2021, denied the charges and was released on a Ksh 200,000 bond.
According to the charge sheet, Koimburi allegedly forged his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) in 1994 to gain entry into higher learning institutions.
The timing of the charges has raised questions, especially considering that the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) is tasked with vetting the academic qualifications of all candidates before they are cleared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to run for office.
Interestingly, Koimburi’s certificates appeared to have passed this vetting process, allowing him to run in the 2021 by-election and serve as a Member of Parliament for almost three years without issue.
His arrest occurred unexpectedly when he was leaving his home on Kenyatta Road in Juja. He was then taken to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters for questioning, before being transferred to Kamukunji Police Station. He spent the night there after his bail request was denied.
