Missing Nairobi County Intern Found Dead After 23 Days
Elvis Munene, a 19-year-old intern at Nairobi City County’s IT department, was found dead at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) on Thursday, 23 days after he was reported missing.
Munene had disappeared on January 29, leaving his family desperate for answers. Despite their repeated public appeals for information, they only discovered his whereabouts after his death.
What Happened on the Day He Went Missing?
On the day Munene vanished, he had left his workplace at City Hall Annex and headed toward Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) to run some errands before going home.
According to a report by Citizen TV, Munene had received a phone call from a close friend as he was leaving work. Their conversation, along with messages exchanged between Munene, his friend, and a family member, indicated that the two had planned to meet downtown to buy a phone cover.
However, in an unexpected turn of events, the pair encountered police officers. While Munene’s friend was detained, Munene managed to escape.
Unfortunately, his escape took a tragic twist. At the junction of Kirinyaga Road and Charles Rubia Road in the CBD, he was allegedly caught by a mob, who accused him of stealing a phone. Between 5:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., the angry crowd attacked him, beating him mercilessly.
Eyewitnesses claim that they saw Munene being overpowered by the mob.
“That guy (Munene) snatched a phone, and the crowd chased him down, caught him, and beat him up. However, the police later arrived and rescued him before an ambulance came. We don’t know where they took him after that,” one witness stated.
How Did He End Up at the Hospital?
Following the violent assault, Munene was taken to Kenyatta National Hospital, where he received urgent medical treatment. Due to the severity of his head injuries, doctors admitted him to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Sadly, Munene succumbed to his injuries just two days later. His body was later transferred to the KNH mortuary, but his family remained unaware of his fate.
Family’s Desperate Search for Answers
For over three weeks, Munene’s family continued searching for him, unaware that he had already passed away. They only discovered his body recently, raising serious concerns about the circumstances that led to his tragic death.
Munene’s mother, Marion Karambu, recalled the last conversation she had with her son. He had called her at around 4:20 p.m., requesting some extra money for transport. She sent him the money, assuming he would head home shortly after.
However, when she arrived home later that evening at 8:00 p.m., Munene was nowhere to be found.
“He called me at around 4:20 p.m., asking for money to add to his transport fare, which I sent him. After that, I didn’t hear from him again. When I got home at 8:00 p.m., I realized he had not arrived,” Karambu recounted.
Adding to the mystery, the family discovered that Munene had left home that day without his identification documents, including his national ID, work ID, and student ID. These were found untouched in his room.
This raised questions because, as a county employee, Munene needed his job ID to access his workplace.
“After searching everywhere, we checked his room and found his IDs, including his national ID, job access card, and student identification. It was strange that he had left without them,” his mother added.
Police Investigation Underway
Following these revelations, authorities have arrested Munene’s close friend and several other individuals believed to be linked to the case. Investigators are now questioning them in an attempt to piece together exactly what happened on the day Munene disappeared and the events that followed.
As the family continues to seek justice, many unanswered questions remain about Munene’s final hours and how his body remained unidentified at the hospital for so long.
