Following weeks of dry and sunny weather, experts from the Kenya Meteorological Department have announced that rainfall is expected to return in the coming weeks.
According to a meteorologist who spoke to the press on Thursday, February 27, the rains are anticipated to begin during the third week of March, marking a shift from the current dry conditions.
The meteorologist shared that the rainfall is expected to be heavy, with the wet season lasting for approximately five months. The rains are projected to begin in mid-March and continue through to late July, providing relief from the ongoing dry spell.
In light of this, the expert encouraged farmers who are preparing for the upcoming planting season to begin their preparations early.
This includes tasks such as tilling the land ahead of the rains. The meteorologist emphasized that farmers who prefer dry planting can still proceed in the first two weeks of March, as the rains are expected to begin around the third week of the month.
“We expect rainfall to start in mid-March, particularly by the third week, and continue steadily through April, before tapering off in July,” the expert explained.
The forecast follows concerns from some farmers who have expressed frustration over the delayed rains. Many have pointed out that the usual short, occasional rains typically experienced at the start of the year have failed to materialize. Some farmers are even contemplating halting their activities for the season due to the lack of rainfall.
“Farmers are eager to begin the planting season, but the weather has been unusually harsh for an extended period, and it seems there is a noticeable change in the climate this year,” said one farmer.
Meanwhile, the Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning about the ongoing hot and dry conditions in the country.
According to the department’s weekly weather advisory, Kenyans should brace for exceptionally high temperatures between February 25 and March 3.
Daytime temperatures are expected to exceed 30°C in most parts of the country, while areas such as Central Kenya, Rift Valley, South-Eastern Lowlands, and Lake Victoria Basin will experience temperatures ranging from 25°C to 30°C.
At night, temperatures in parts of Central Kenya, Rift Valley, and around Mount Kilimanjaro will dip below 10°C, bringing some relief from the daytime heat.
