A government official serving at the Lands Control Board has been arrested by officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) after being caught red-handed soliciting a bribe.
According to the EACC, detectives from the commission acted swiftly after receiving a tip-off from a complainant who had recently sold his land and needed approval from the board to transfer ownership.
Reports indicate that the arrested officer had demanded a bribe from the landowner in exchange for processing the necessary documents. Frustrated by the demand, the complainant decided to report the matter to the EACC.
“The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has apprehended a member of the Tigania West Lands Control Board over allegations of demanding bribes from members of the public to facilitate approvals for land transactions,” part of the EACC’s official statement read.
The commission further disclosed that the suspect was caught in the act while receiving the bribe, following a well-planned sting operation by investigators.
“EACC detectives set up an operation and managed to arrest the suspect while accepting the bribe. During the arrest, officers recovered a total of KSh 70,000, which is suspected to be proceeds of corruption,” the commission confirmed.
Following his arrest, the suspect was taken to Isiolo Police Station, where he was booked for the offence of receiving a bribe. Authorities have since launched further investigations to gather more evidence before the case proceeds to court.
Crackdown on Corruption Continues
This arrest comes just days after another high-profile arrest involving a senior prosecution officer. On February 17, the EACC arrested a Principal Prosecution Counsel attached to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) in Kilgoris over allegations of bribery.
According to reports, the officer had been accused of demanding a KSh 50,000 bribe from a businessman in exchange for expediting a court case. Upon receiving intelligence on the matter, EACC officers moved in and arrested the suspect.
Shortly after the arrest, the ODPP responded by sending the officer on compulsory leave to allow for investigations to proceed without interference.
“The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has noted reports circulating on social media regarding the arrest of a senior prosecutor accused of soliciting a bribe of KSh 50,000 from a businessman to fast-track a court case,” the ODPP stated in an official letter.
“In light of these allegations, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has directed that the officer in question proceed on compulsory leave with immediate effect, in accordance with the ODPP Human Resource Policies and Procedures Manual 2022. Internal investigations into the matter have commenced immediately,” the letter further read.
The EACC has remained steadfast in its fight against corruption, with recent arrests highlighting the commission’s commitment to weeding out corrupt practices in public offices.
