Ruto Orders Speedy IEBC Selection Process
President William Ruto has called on the panel responsible for selecting nominees for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson and Commissioners to accelerate their work. The directive comes after the death of Malava Member of Parliament, Malulu Injendi.
While attending the funeral of MP Malulu Injendi in Malava on Tuesday afternoon, President Ruto urged the selection panel to expedite the recruitment process so that residents of Malava can soon elect a new representative.
Ruto expressed his support for the people of Malava, assuring them that his government would continue to serve them effectively despite the loss of their legislator. He promised not to abandon the community, adding that he would stand by them to ensure they get a new MP and adequate services.
“I want to promise that I will not abandon you, we are together in this, and in honor of the late MP Injendi, who was my friend, I will walk with you to the end,” Ruto stated.
The President also urged the selection panel to speed up the process of reconstituting the IEBC. “Now that I have already appointed the panel to handle the reconstitution of the IEBC, I urge those involved to expedite the process so that the people of Malava can have their elections,” he added.
President Ruto emphasized his readiness to work closely with the new Member of Parliament once elected by the Malava residents. His call to hasten the reconstitution of the electoral commission comes just over a month after he appointed a nine-member committee to oversee the process.
On January 27, Ruto gazetted the appointment of Lindah Gakii, Oloo Adams, James Misati, Nicodemus Bore, Koki Muli, Andrew Kipkoech, Nelson Makanda, Caroline Kituku, and Fatuma Saman as members of the task force responsible for reconstituting the IEBC. Following their appointment, the panel has advertised the available positions and started compiling a list of applicants for shortlisting.
During a briefing with Members of the National Assembly on February 18, Nelson Makanda, the committee’s chairperson, reassured Kenyans that the panel was dedicated to ensuring a transparent and fair process.
“We would like to reassure the public that the selection panel is committed to conducting a fair and transparent process. We will keep the public informed at every stage of the recruitment exercise,” Makanda said.
Malulu Injendi, the late MP, passed away on February 17 after a prolonged illness. He had been receiving treatment at the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi. At the time of his passing, Injendi was serving his third term as a Member of Parliament.
